  1. List people to contact and what about

  2. Webinar Prep – Link slides and link to ideas wall. Include feedback given during the webinar

Dr Colin Beale : Specifically looking at conservation biology, Colin also states the following on his bio : In the UK we are working both to understand the fundamental demographic processes that generate range limits and to apply this knowledge to predict impacts from climate change.

I’m hoping to contact Colin to ask about specifics regarding predicted impacts of climate change and the demographic processes as discussed.

Alizee Desrousseaux : Alizee looks to combine her research of urban chemical pollution to develop mitigation strategies for a healthy urban environment in 2050, hopefully Alizee will be able to shed some light on the predicted outcomes for the future of our earth and look towards ways in which we can make substantial changes to the way we are living.

Dr. Jonathon Ensor : Dr Ensor is a Senior Research Fellow (Associate Professor) at the Stockholm Environment Institute, and he has a particular focus on community-based climate change adaptation. this is vital to my current research and potential work, looking at community focussed change and work we can do within communities to help increase awareness of the effects of climate change.

David Diston : University of York is a part of COP 26 in Glasgow in november and there is an immense amount of research currently underway to discuss during this conference. The designated COP26 central contact for UoY is David and I’m hoping he will be open to answering some questions for me.

I intend to be a part of ‘Our Big Conversation’ which is a York Council online event starting on the 18th June through July. It’s a chance to get involved in a city-wide discussion, helping the city get to grips with some of the biggest challenges facing us, and they encourage businesses and citizens to actively get involved and be a part of the decisions the council makes.

Robin Perutz – As part of sustainability week 2021, Robin held a talk on “Those who foresaw Climate Change but the world did not listen”, concerning not only scientists, but poets, artists, explorers, science fiction writers and more. I couldn’t find a recording of the event so will contact Robin to discuss this further hopefully.

Alice Seaton conducted a talk at the UoY in January 2020 regarding the future generations and the effects of climate change on those generations. I’m really intrigued to talk to Alice and discuss her findings from this talk and where she is now with her research,.

York itself is running a major change in terms of how York as a city is helping prevent climate change and slow the changes that are taking effect. A large number of these changes are now underway, including being part of an e-scooter trial and working with businesses to improve sustainability. More info can be found here and I’m hoping to involve the Council in my conversations regarding climate change.

Of course, York Green Party has a huge list of changes they wish to implement, there are a number of contacts here that I am keen to talk to further, and hopefully help understand the ways they wish to implement changes within this City.

One Planet Week at the University of York : This is part of a number fo talks hosted at the university at the beginning of the year. I’m hoping some of these were recorded so will search YouTube to look further.

Design Specific

I am part of a team of young designers in York called Bright Young Things. This is a small circle of York based designers and artists just starting out in their careers and is such a supportive environment.

The founder of BYT also helps organise York Design Week of which I was a part of last year and am due to be a part of this year. I’m hoping to work closely with other designers and businesses here to discuss the potential of this project, the impact it could have and the stages I would have to take to make this project a reality. I’m also hoping I can aim towards YDW in October to host a talk or be part of a conversation regarding future generations and climate change.

Rebecca founded Kaizen Arts Agency in York – “Kaizen Arts CIC is a multidisciplinary design agency with a remit to make stuff better. We work with communities, developing projects that empower citizens to make change together, through active participation.” … This is the exact person I need to discuss my project with, I feel Rebecca will be an invaluable source to helping me understand the needs of this project and direction it can go in.

Businesses / Other Contacts

I am hoping to discuss the impact of sustainability amongst large scale businesses here in the UK, one of which is the founder of a high end chocolatiers who focusses heavily on sustainability. I also have a contact who works with an investment company working with green companies, new innovative companies and highly successful sustainable businesses. Hopefully with a bit of help from her I will be able to understand the impact larger businesses can have.

But I also need to remember that I want to keep this community focussed and looking towards intergenerational processes. Keeping focussed on a smaller part of this project will prevent me spreading my research too far and wide!!

As you can see from my 9 slides, I wrote way too much for this initial webinar… however I got so much out of it, as I did with my conversation with Susanna the day before the webinar.

With Susanna and the other peers, my main focus and thoughts stemmed around the following:

  1. Accountability – this is the key point here in this topic and this is wshat I need to focus on primarily

  2. Falmouth Staff member – new employer for head of environmental …something… i need to find this contact!!

  3. normalising the facts and the data – discussions with people, connecting people to the climate issues and informing people of the facts in a clear manageable way

  4. Could end up being a collab with charities, businesses and communities

  5. Experiment with outcomes – workshops / mini films / illustrations / telling stories / begin networking and framing groups to work with

  6. Community based and accessible – the greenhouses idea

  7. Contact volunteering communities and voluntary services…

  8. Co – created design – involving participents, creating something together? QUESTION if you hold workshops with someone else, if the outcome is co-created, who owns the research?!

  9. Remember consent when documenting something

  10. Are there any current artists/designers in this field? I NEED TO RESEARCH THIS

  11. Situational art – making conversations… THIS IS A GOOD POINT

  12. Accountability – the everyday stuff we do. Workshops to help create something new to help people become more sustainable? Could be totally beyond the realms of possibility but it creates the conversations. events – walk to work, how do you get intergenerations to become more aware of climate change emergency?

  13. LOOK AT CAPE FAREWELL – Simon Boxall (?) Southampton University

  14. Econmics Foundations at Neff (?)

  15. Bio Architecture – mentioned by Jess… Bosco Verticale

  16. Feminist Futures of Spacial Practice – suggested by Susanna

Ooooh so I love Winnie’s idea of Climate Change deniers – this is such a huge topic because there are still so many people out there who refuse to believe this is happening. Perhaps again this could be something to touch on with the more exhibition like project of the greenhouses. It’s really quite tricky too because how can we get people to change their minds? This is 100% something for me to consider carefully and look into…

Omar’s link was hugely valuable, it was so packed full of facts and figures so I’m extrememly grateful for that. I agree with Omar, my research question needs reviewing and I’m hoping over the next week that happens and with further research I’m able to chip away at this question to really grasp the question I’m wanting to answer. I do like the idea of looking at it from a governmental level – of course we have targets and net carbon dates in mind but I’m intrigued to see how these pan out over the next few years… Will we achieve these targets or will they just be palmed off by the next government?
